Strictly’s Lauren Steadman hopes to be first disabled dancer in final

December 8, 2018

Paralympian Lauren Steadman is hoping to become the first disabled dancer in the Strictly final…if she can make it through this weekend.

The swimmer-turned-paratriathlete, 25, says: “I’m so proud to have made it to the semi-finals of Strictly. The competitor in me always wanted to make it as far as I possibly could.

“Normalising disabilities was one of the reasons I wanted to do the show and I hope that I’ve helped in some way to achieve that. It’s been such an incredible journey. To make the finals would be the icing on the cake.”

Dance partner AJ Pritchard, 24, now in his third consecutive semi-final, added: “I am so proud of be dancing with her. Lauren’s message is an important one, ‘Don’t let anything hold you back’.

"To have her dancing in the finals, making history as the first time someone with a disability has done so would be an amazing achievement – not only for her, but for the show”.

Phil Talbot at Scope, the disability equality charity Scope, added: “It’s fantastic to see Lauren do so well on Strictly.

"We know that disability still remains hugely underrepresented on our screens and in the media.

“Disabled people on prime-time TV, challenges negative attitudes, dispels preconceptions, breaks down barriers and brings everyone together.”

Paralympian Jonnie Peacock competed last year but were eliminated in the Blackpool round.
