Stevie Nicks Gave Sheryl Crow This 1 Piece of Advice

December 4, 2021

Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow are both powerful women in the music industry. The two artists collaborated on Crow’s 2019 album Threads. Crow also worked extensively on Nicks’ 2001 solo album Trouble in Shangri-La.

Here is the advice Nicks gave Crow years ago and how she learned her lesson the hard way.

Stevie Nicks shared the advice she gave Sheryl Crow

As two women with successful careers in a historically male-dominated industry, it makes sense that Nicks would have some wisdom to impart to her peer.

In a 2001 interview with ABC News, the “Gypsy” singer revealed the one piece of advice she gave Crow while working together.

“What I tell Sheryl Crow: Don’t get interested in somebody who’s going to go back on the road,” Nicks said. “Men are going to go out on the road, and they’re going to find other women. So if you really want to save yourself a whole lot of heartache, do not fall in love with somebody in a band. Just don’t.”

Nicks explained, “Because it just doesn’t ever work. It’s too much to ask of them to be true … In my book, it’s a rule. It’s just an invitation to heartache … If you want to find somebody and you want to be married, and you want to have children, don’t make it a rock star.”

The ‘Dreams’ singer’s advice came from personal experience

Nicks knows all about dating a fellow rock star, so her advice to Sheryl Crow likely came from personal experience. Nicks was high school sweethearts with her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham. The couple played in the band Fritz together before breaking off and forming the duo Buckingham Nicks, and then they ultimately joined Fleetwood Mac together.

But Nicks and Buckingham’s relationship didn’t survive the fame, fortune, and rock and roll lifestyle that came with being part of such a successful group. After breaking up, they continued to work, tour, and perform on stage together for years as part of Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham went on to marry Kristen Messner, with whom he shares three children. Nicks was married briefly for about three months in 1983. In her ABC News interview, nicks referred to Buckingham as “the musical love of [her] life,” while Buckingham has said that the former couple never really got closure from their relationship.
