Rylan Clark, 33, has revealed for the first time how he suffered from heart failure twice following the devastating end of his marriage last year. The presenter also suffered breakdowns after he split from ex-husband Dan Neal.

Rylan said his body “completely shut down” due to the effect of the split on his mental health.

The Celebrity Big Brother star revealed he had to be rushed to hospital on both occasions.

He said: “Twice last year I ended up in the back of an ambulance because my heart failed.”

It comes as the Strictly: It Takes Two host celebrated the launch of his new book: Ten: The Decade That Changed My Future at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The star said his heart beat reached 248bpm, way above the normal resting heart rate which lays between 60 and 120 bpm.

The former X Factor star said he was given an injection in bed by medics to restart his heart.

Discussing the experience, he said: “I knew it wasn’t right. It turned out that my heart had to be restarted.”

He explained he lay “in resus” with pads and wires attached to his body.

Rylan said he later asked what the pads were for, and was told they would have been used if he hadn’t taken a breath, as medics would have had to “restart [him] electrically.”

According to Metro.co.uk, he went on to add at the event: “I think I was so frightened of being alone.

“I think that’s what contributed to my downfall and my spiral that I was in.”

He also dove deeper into his health issues when speaking on Fearne Cotton’s podcast this week.

On Fearne’s My Happy Place podcast, he said: “My body did completely shut down. I wouldn’t eat.

“I went through a stage where I couldn’t even talk, which for some people might be quite handy.

“My speech was just slurred. My mum thought I was having a stroke.

“My body just went. I went down to 9 stone and I am six-foot-four.”

Rylan dealt with his issues during a break away from his work commitments, including stepping down from his BBC Radio 2 show until he recovered.

While he believes this didn’t help with the “quick decline” in his health, he thinks it was for the best.

Rylan informed fans at the time that he was taking a break from work and seeking help.

He and Dan met back in 2013 and tied the knot two years later.
