It didn’t take long for the nation to fall in love with father-and-son duo Martin and Roman Kemp when they hit our TV screens together on Celebrity Gogglebox. And it seems the handsome duo are closer than ever as Father’s Day approaches.
“If you asked any of my friends, they’d all tell you that I don’t need one single day to show how much I love my dad,” Roman, 28, tells us, before explaining how much his dad – who’s a household name thanks to his time in EastEnders and Spandau Ballet – means to him.
The pair also wax lyrical about one another’s fashion sense, with Capital Radio DJ Roman saying, “Dad’s input was essential when the 80s trend was at its peak.”
Meanwhile, Martin – who also has a daughter, Harley, with wife Shirlie – admits he’s jealous of Roman’s trainer collection. This friendly banter will come into its own when the pair team up again soon to host the return of their ITV challenge show, Martin And Roman’s Sunday Best. “Working with Dad will be carnage,” Roman laughs. “He says I boss him around.”
Jokes aside, the pair are clearly very close, with former I’m A Celebrity star Roman candidly admitting, “There’s nothing I don’t talk to my dad about, hand on heart.”
Here, Roman – who recently confessed that some of his ex-girlfriends fancied his dad – and Martin, 59, open up about making up for lost time on Father’s Day this year and wanting to steal each other’s clothes…
Roman, how do you normally celebrate Father’s Day?
Roman: Historically, we’re not a family that has gone all out for Father’s Day. If you asked any of my friends, they’d all tell you that I don’t need one single day to show how much I love my dad. That said, being in lockdown last year and not being able to show my dad the appreciation I have for him was a real struggle. I’m definitely looking forward to being able to celebrate this year.
Are you any good at Father’s Day presents?
Roman: I always get it spot on when it comes to buying gifts for my dad. We spend so much time together, so I never struggle to think about what he’d like. In fact, I like to think I’m the best present buyer in the family!
What are your styles like?
Martin: My style has evolved over the years. Roman will tell you that there have been some showstoppers… even some outfits that have needed to be plugged in! There was a time when I wouldn’t arrive anywhere not suited and booted, but these days I take a more casual stride with my wardrobe – it’s much more relaxed.
Roman: I love feeling comfortable in what I’m wearing and spend the majority of my time in a tracksuit. I’m sure that when I first started my job my boss expected me to stop arriving at work in a tracksuit or my pyjamas after a few weeks… four years in and it’s still my go-to look.
What were you looking forward to wearing when lockdown ended?
Roman: As I’ve said before, comfort has always been my priority, my tracksuits are like a second skin. That said, after a year of having quite limited opportunities to put on a pair of jeans, I’m really looking forward to shaking off the tracksuit and heading out to meet my friends in a shirt and tailored shorts – weather allowing, that is!
Has your dad got anything amazing in his wardrobe that you’ve borrowed?
Roman: There are two things about dad’s style that I can’t knock – he always looks way sharper than me in a suit and his trainer game is on point. I’m always after the ones he turns up in.
Do you ever find yourselves in the same outfit?
Roman: Luckily, we’ve rarely turned up in the same outfit. That would be pretty awkward if it happened during Weekend Best filming! Sometimes we do turn up in matching colours though.
Martin: Roman and I do find ourselves in the same outfits from time to time. But I never look quite as cool as him!
Do you inspire each other’s style at all?
Roman: There have definitely been times when I’ve turned to dad for outfit advice. Dad’s input was essential for me when the 80s trend was at its peak.
Martin: Roman’s trainer collection is something to be in awe of, he’s got millions – lots that I would like to get my hands on!
Martin, we are sure you’ve worn some amazing outfits in your time, do any in particular stand out?
Martin: I’ve lived through the fashion decades and made some mistakes, but mistakes I am proud of. The 80s probably stand out the most for me, that was a great time to get dressed. The clothes were mad and so much fun – the ruffled collars, the big shoulder pads and wild hair. I love looking back on those times.
You did this shoot with M&S. How did it go, and did you choose your own looks?
Roman: The shoot was great. The pandemic has been testing and I have to say that I am extremely grateful that Dad and I work together. I’m lucky that we can sit together now – it’s been a bit of a lifesaver. It’s so important to me to feel comfortable in what
I’m wearing, picking out the right clothes is like finding a secret super power. I’m always involved in my wardrobe choices.
Martin: It’s a joy to work with Roman, he’s a complete perfectionist and watching him shine in a room always makes me feel so proud. I always look at him in wonder. As for selecting my own looks… always! You could say that Roman takes his work ethic from my wardrobe selection – I take it very seriously and have a fine-tuned sense of what I like.
What are your favourite pieces in the collection and why?
Roman: I’m definitely a shorts man, I could live in the chino shorts. I imagine in the future I’ll be one of those people who wear shorts all year round.
Martin: The striped shirt has a 50s edge to it, especially paired with the slightly tailored trousers.
What’s a fashion faux pas for you?
Martin: I’ve tapped into a lot of trends. I would say never be afraid of any clothes – you shouldn’t be afraid to wear anything. Get out there and just enjoy life.
