Prince Harry seems "genuinely happy" after years of "masking his emotions," a royal expert has claimed.

The Duke of Sussex, 38, has been on a transatlantic promotional tour for his new memoir, titled Spare, in which he's laid bare every aspect of his life, from growing up in the royal family to his relationship with his wife, Meghan Markle.

The prince made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the US, where he discussed his new memoir and the royal family, and body language expert Darren Stanton has given his take on the interview, saying it's "clear Harry is loving life in California."

Darren continued: "While speaking about moving to America, I saw genuine flashes of happiness and joy, which is something I haven’t seen in previous interviews.

He added: "In my opinion, Harry has been known to mask his emotions over the years. However, now that his book is published, he’s in a position to openly speak about his views."

Darren also observed that Harry "was extremely open whilst speaking about the death of his mother Diana," explaining: "While he did flash some expressions of sadness, his body language was consistent with someone who was speaking from the heart.

"Overall, I thought it was a great interview with Harry being extremely open and to the point. There was no sidestepping or objections to any questions, proving he was happy and relaxed to speak about all areas of his life.”

Addressing how well the Duke of Sussex got on with the host, Darren noted: "The pair were both matching and mirroring each other’s body language, while Harry seemed very relaxed for a lot of the interview."

Harry downed tequila shots on The Late Show as he poked fun at the Royals alongside Tom Hanks and discussed some of the book's darker moments, such as when he details his Taliban kill count.

In Spare and on the promotional tour to accompany it, Harry has opened up on a wide range of topics – even discussing his uncle Prince Andrew's scandals during an interview with Anderson Cooper on the US show 60 Minutes.

Harry has previously detailed how he assured Meghan they would never have their security taken away, telling her: “Never. Not in this climate of hate. And not after what happened to my mother.”

In his 60 Minutes interview, he added: “Also, not in the wake of my Uncle Andrew.

"Despite being embroiled in a shameful scandal, accused of sexually assaulting a young girl, no one had even suggested removing his security.

“People have had plenty of reasons to complain about us, sex crimes weren’t one of them.”

Andrew was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre. He denied the claim and settled the case out of court for an undisclosed fee.
