Piers Morgan, 56, took to Twitter and paid tribute to ITN editor Geoff Hill who died after a battle with cancer. The former Good Morning Britain presenter reacted to the “incredibly sad news”.

Taking to Twitter, Piers praised Geoff as a “class act” after news of his death.

In view of his eight million followers, the broadcaster retweeted a post from ITN confirming the tragic news.

The post read: “We are devastated at the passing of our friend and colleague Geoff Hill.

“Geoff was a highly respected journalist and a dear friend to so many at ITN. He will be greatly missed, and we all send our deepest condolences to his family.”

The tribute was accompanied by a photo of Geoff, and the micro-blogging site was soon inundated with comments.

Piers penned: “What incredibly sad news.

“A brilliant journalist beloved by his newsroom colleagues, and a great guy who fought his illness with such courage and good humour.

“Had the honour of working with him at CNN & ITV and he was a class act, both professionally & personally. RIP Geoff.”

Social media users offered their condolences, as Sally Jones said: “So sad, lost my partner to leukaemia a year ago today.”

Jacqueline Hayward wrote: “Very sad news. RIP.”

Debra added: “My condolences go to the family and friends. RIP Geoff Hill.”

Earlier this month, Geoff opened up about his battle with cancer and remarked that he is “not out of the woods yet”.

In his candid interview, Geoff explained that he was “knocked sideways” by his diagnosis in 2017.

“I was out of breath, I had sweats and lack of energy, but you don’t think you’ve got blood cancer. No one does. But the signs are really important,’ explained Geoff to MailOnline.

“The smallest virus could have killed me. If someone had sneezed, that could’ve been it. My immune system was totally compromised.”

He returned to the newsroom in 2018 but the following year he spent a month in hospital with sepsis.

Geoff suffered another relapse to his immune system in 2020 after doctors found cancer had spread to his bone marrow.

He made the decision to step down from his role last year as he underwent more procedures.

He was also a trustee of Cure Leukaemia who penned a heartfelt statement.

It read: “We’re devastated to hear the news that Geoff Hill has sadly passed away following his battle with leukaemia.

“Geoff was a very humble man who wanted to do all he could to help @CureLeukaemia & was to join the board as a Trustee.

“We send our sincere condolences to all his family.”
