Hollywood actor Matthew Perry, 51, reportedly brought “palpable unease” onto the set of the Friends reunion show. The star has previously been to rehab twice during his time filming the hit show in an attempt to overcome his alcohol and painkiller addictions, which he has openly addressed in the past. However, the long-awaited reunion special didn’t discuss his “troubled” past, which one critic claims to have contributed to an atmosphere of “unease” while filming.
It nonetheless lingers around the margins with palpable unease
Variety critic Caroline Framke claimed that the star’s “troubled” history created an atmosphere of “unease”, as it wasn’t addressed.
She said: “The special ultimately declines to discuss any of his troubled experience explicitly, but it nonetheless lingers around the margins with palpable unease.
“When his castmates talk about staying in touch with each other, he cracks a joke about how he doesn’t hear ‘from anyone’ so dryly that it’s impossible to tell if it’s actually a joke”, she added.
The comment comes as the star previously admitted that he struggles to remember “between season three and six” of his time on the hit comedy show.
The actor, who played Chandler Bing, also revealed to his co-stars that he felt every night “like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh”, adding that he knew “it wasn’t healthy at all”.
Upon hearing the news, Lisa, who played Phoebe Buffay, said that the cast members “never knew that”.
The star previously received a Champion of Recovery award in 2013 for opening sober living home Perry House, which is in his former Malibu home.
It’s been reported that from 2002 to 2003 Matthew earned $24million to play the character of Chandler Bing in the hit series.
Before the special aired, the actor’s appearance in the show’s promotional video sparked concern amongst fans as he “seemed off”.
Fans noted how the Chandler actor was slurring his speech and talked more slowly than usual.
However, a source claimed that the star’s behaviour was down to undergoing hours of “emergency dental work”.
Since the promo video aired, a source told The Sun that during the filming, the actor was “in pain”.
They said: “Matthew turned up to the reunion [in April] and members of his team said that he had an emergency tooth procedure that day.
“That was said to impact his wellbeing and also how he was feeling.
“He had been in pain from what we understand, which caused the slurred speech,” they added.
Taking to Twitter after the release of the promo video, fans of the show shared their worries about the actor.
Previously, in an interview with People magazine, the star admitted that his lifestyle got “out of control and very unhealthy” following a 1997 jet-ski accident which left him addicted to painkiller Vicodin.
Speaking to the BBC five years ago, Matthew said he had been “a little out of it” while filming parts of Friends.
He said: “I don’t remember three years of [the show].
“Somewhere between Seasons 3 and 6 … I was a little out of it,” Matthew added.
