Kelly Rowland To Host Black Women In Hollywood Awards, Releases New Single

February 8, 2019

Grammy winner Kelly Rowland is set to host Essence‘s 12th annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards.

The event will held on February 21 ahead of the 2019 Academy Awards at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California. It will celebrate actresses who are making their mark on Hollywood through their art and their activism.

The 2019 Black Women In Hollywood honorees are KiKi Layne, Jenifer Lewis, Regina Hall, and Amandla Stenberg.

“I’m so honored to host this year’s ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards and shine a light on four exceptional women for their art and social activism,” Rowland said in a statement.

She added, “With this phenomenal Oscar-week celebration, ESSENCE creates a special place that elevates the beauty, power and magic of Black women.”

Rowland, in partnership with Dove, also dropped a new single “Crown” accompanied by a video directed by Hannah Lux Davis.

“Crown” is an inspiring single about empowering women to embrace their hair and to shut down bullies who tease about the color, texture or type of their hair.

“I was really excited when I heard about the campaign surrounding hair and having women celebrate their hair, no matter what color or texture or type. It reminded me immediately of the little Kelly, who went through a lot of stuff as a kid with her own hair,” Rowland told AOL.

She continued, “To be able to partner with a big brand like Dove and for them to give me the freedom to be able to write the song and have the opportunity to instill confidence in these young girls has been amazing.”
