Kate Garraway ‘really likes’ being number two on Good Morning Britain.

The 53-year-old star – who appears alongside Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on the ITV breakfast show – insisted she is happy with her role as ‘part of a team’, although she wouldn’t turn down her own talk show.

Appearing on the 5 Years Time podcast, she said: ‘Sometimes the thing you crave for most isn’t the thing that makes you most happy. When most people start out they think they want their own chat show, like David Letterman. That feels like the pinnacle.

‘I’ve never really had my name above a billboard on breakfast television, there have always been other presenters bigger than me: Eamonn and Fiona, Christine and Adrian on Daybreak, Piers and Susanna…

‘I’ve always been a kind of number two and actually, I really like it. It doesn’t really make any difference, actually, you still get to do what you love and actually you form a relationship where viewers don’t really know about that.

‘I love being part of a team. I don’t know I would really like to be a sole operator. But if they want to give me a chat show, that’s great.’

One definite advantage of that teamwork is getting to learn from other people, and Kate revealed she’s benefited from working with her colleagues.

She added: ‘I’ve learnt a lot from [Susanna Reid], Richard Arnold is a complete genius of comedy. Constantly learning. Constantly stealing, actually, is the truth. “That’s clever, I’m going to try that myself”.

‘Eamonn Holmes is a brilliant presenter. When I first went to GMTV I learnt so much from him. I can’t be him, I can’t do the cheeky chappy Belfast boy thing.

‘But there are just things he does which is so clever in interviews, which I still go back to and think, “oh I’m gonna do a bit of an Eamonn Holmes on this one”.

‘And Piers Morgan, obviously Piers Morgan is everyone’s inspiration. He is, actually.’
