Harry and Meghan plotted royal exit just six months after marrying, says royal expertJune 28, 2022
Royal biographer Andrew Morton has alleged that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began plotting their Royal Family exit long before making the official announcement in January 2020.
"Harry has always been someone who connects, and when I see Harry kneeling down with his arm around some kid, I'm just watching Diana again. It transports you back 25-30 years," Andrew said.
Joining the producers of the royals news podcast Pod Save The Queen, the British writer – who has composed the biographies of several royal figures, including the late Princess of Wales – claims that despite being "a natural" with the public, Prince Harry "hated" his royal title.
"Harry was having conversations in a London hotel with Oprah Winfrey back in November 2018, just six months after they’d been married," he continued.
"So, they were thinking about a different direction of travel pretty early on."
Andrew added: "The irony is, basically, they have been given keys to the 'first class lounge' – Harry was given the position of Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth, which was effectively the Queen's way of saying 'You do the rest of the world and leave William and Catherine to do the UK'."
Last year, the Wall Street Journal revealed that Prince Harry had met in secret with US talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and television producer Jon Karmen in a London hotel room in 2018 – the same year that he tied the knot with wife Meghan Markle.
Karmen disclosed that the conversation between the young Prince and the TV host centred on his plans to launch an Apple TV series on mental health.
Kensington Palace announced in the release of the six-episode series 'The Me You Can't See' almost a year later, in April 2019.
The two years that followed would see Harry and Meghan announce their decision to "step back as 'senior' members" of the British royal family, split their time between the UK and the US, and become financially independent.
As well as this, March 2021 saw the premiere of the pair's exclusive interview with Oprah on their reasoning for 'breaking away' from royal tradition, which aired on CBS in the States and ITV in the UK.
Speaking on the podcast, Andrew explained: "It didn’t work out because Prince Harry is cursed with charisma but hates being a Prince, and I think that he saw Meghan as a way out.
"They didn’t have to leave the royal family in the way that they did, but they did.
He added: "Nobody thanks you for a divorce, and nobody thanks you for a royal divorce. As a couple, they divorced themselves from the royal family.
"They found the pressure and the intense inquiries into their lives too much to handle. They came to a mutual decision to step back."
