Golden Globe Winner Richard Madden Talks James Bond Speculation – BackstageJanuary 7, 2019
Winning his first Golden Globe tonight for Best Actor in a TV Drama series for Netflix/BBC’s Bodyguard, Scottish-born actor Richard Madden continued to wave off rumors that he’s going to succeed Daniel Craig in MGM’s James Bond series.
“It’s just rumors,” said the actor when asked if martinis were in his future.
Recently, the Game of Thrones vet was asked the same 007 question by the New York Times saying,”You know, I’ll see what happens in the future. Yeah, I think we’ll deal with that when we get to it.”
In the British BBC thriller Bodyguard, Madden plays David Budd, an Afghanistan war vet with PTSD who is assigned to protect the home secretary, Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), whose hawkish politics he despises.
“I wanted to get his moral ambiguity, if he’s good or bad… I wanted to convey the PTSD side of this man in a way that I have not seen on television and in film… I wanted to do it in a genuine and empathetic way,” said Madden on his process.
Reflecting on his first win, the actor beamed, “You can constantly question yourself as an actor, if you’re good enough, if you’re real enough, if you’re deserving of anything. To be nominated was a real confidence boosters… to receive something like this is just a real wake up call to me to be like ‘believe in yourself as other people do’”
