After the 46-year-old and her husband, NBA star Dwyane Wade, surprised fans on social media with the arrival of their daughter Kaavia James via surrogate on Nov. 7, they were sadly met with backlash over the photos they used celebrate their little girl. In the series of pictures, Union was seen cradling her newborn in a bed alongside Wade, while wearing a hospital gown to allow for skin-to-skin bonding with their baby.

People on Twitter were both critical and curious of the nature of the photos, with one person tweeting, “Just curious why is Gabrielle Union in a hospital gown if that’s a surrogate child?”

Another user wrote, “Why was Gabrielle Union wearing a hospital gown LMAO.”

In a new clip for Oprah’s special, Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby (which airs Dec. 8 on OWN), the couple addressed the painful moment that they felt was inappropriate and invasive.

“For me, the most hurtful thing was once we had our baby and everybody started talking about, ‘Why is she in the bed holding the baby? Why she got a gown on? Why is she acting like she just had a baby?’” the NBA player said. “Once again, people are uneducated on the process and why we decided to go skin-to-skin as soon as our baby came out.”

Given how transparent the Being Mary Jane star has been about her fertility issues, one would think that fans would have shown more sensitivity to the new mom.

In one particularly emotional part of the interview, Union got teary-eyed as she said, “I’m already getting choked up. It’s still hard to let go,” referring to the pain she felt for not being about to carry her own child.

The actress has previously spoken about her infertility in her 2017 memoir, We’re Going to Need More Wine, even sharing that fact that she suffered “eight or nine miscarriages.”

“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant – I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle or coming out of an IVF cycle,” she wrote. Union later revealed that she was diagnosed with adenomyosis, which is a specific type of endometriosis that only occurs in the uterus, according to Mayo Clinic.

Apparently, the actress had never even considered having her own children until she began to build a relationship with step-sons Zaire, 15, and Zion, 10, as well as Wade’s nephew Dahveon, 16.

“I never wanted kids,” she told People in 2017. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”
