Death in Paradise: Ralf Little stars as DI Neville Parker

Actor Ralf Little plays the lead investigator DI Neville Parker in popular detective drama Death In Paradise. The TV star, who turned 40 last year, said his first appearance on the show coincided with his milestone birthday, leaving him “a mess” with anxiety and fear.

Ralf said it had taken a little while for the weight of the responsibility of playing the lead role to hit him, despite spending five and a half months filming for it in the Caribbean.

He has now admitted to cramming “six months worth of anxiety” into a short space of time, when his character arrived on screen back in 2019.

The former Royle Family star said he couldn’t watch his first episode as the “responsibly was too much,” speaking in a new interview.

Revealing that it wasn’t until his fiancé Lindsey Ferrentino checked Twitter and reassured him that viewers liked his character that he felt better.

“Just before it was on air, I went: ‘Oh my God, Death in Paradise is on tonight!’ That was the first time I emotionally connected to the weight of it.

“I was suddenly a mess: ‘What if people hate it? What if I’m not good in it?’

“I crammed six months’ anxiety into 15 minutes,” he said, during an interview with the Telegraph.

Ralf went on to say that he watched animated sitcom Rick and Morty on Netflix instead.

“The responsibility was too much,” he told the publication.

Fifteen minutes into the programme, his partner, who was in America at the time, called with the news that his debut had seemingly been a success.

Reciting Lindsey’s words, he said: “Don’t worry, I’ve been monitoring Twitter – you’re a hit.

“So you can crawl out from under your rock.”

Ralf and the American screenplay writer have been engaged since September 2018.

Discussing their wedding plans, he said the couple plan to wait until the coronavirus pandemic is over and he is not living in the Caribbean for half of the year.

In a new podcast, the BBC One star confirmed that he would be back for the 11th series of Death In Paradise.

So it looks like their wedding plans will be on hold for a little bit longer, as he heads to Guadeloupe to film the new series.

Over the years, the English actor has appeared in numerous successful television shows.

He played Antony in The Royle Family which ran for three series and several specials from 1998 to 2012.

He also appeared in six seasons of Two Pints Of Lager and A Packet of Crisps as Jonny Keogh.

Ralf also made a guest appearance on Death In Paradise six years before landing his role as DI Neville Parker.

Death In Paradise continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
