Mathematician Carol Vorderman, 60, has revealed that she still turns to a calculator to help her with maths problems despite being hailed as a numbers genius on Channel 4 game show Countdown. Speaking to The One Show hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, the star made the admission after teasing her appearance on the show in a stunning behind the scenes social media snap.

Taking to Instagram, the star gave her 104,000 followers a glimpse of what to expect ahead of her BBC appearance.

Donning a pair of tight, figure-hugging, blue jeans and a matching navy zip-up top, the pilot snapped a picture from the inside of her dressing room.

She captioned the picture: “On @bbctheoneshow in a minute…talking numbers.”

Carol’s hair was styled in loose waves which tumbled just past her shoulders – despite the star relaying her recent DIY hair dye disaster to fans.

Appearing on the favourite magazine show this evening, the star spoke about the impact that technology has had on the younger generation’s ability to learn maths.

The One Show host Jermaine asked the star: “There was a time where at school the teacher would say to you, ‘Listen, you need to know your maths, because when you’re out on the street you’re not going to have a calculator with you, so I don’t know what you’re going to do there.’

“Whereas now, pretty much everyone’s got a calculator on their phone, haven’t they?” he continued.

Referencing the lack of interest in learning the essential subject, the former footballer asked Carol for her thoughts on the subject.

“Do you think that’s part of the problem, laziness almost?” he said.

Carol replied: “Yeah, I think it is part of the problem, it’s like with any skill, when you’re playing football, you know, you learn something, you practice it, you have muscle memory.

“If you stop practicing then you kind of get a bit rusty, a bit ropey, and it’s exactly the same if you learn to play the guitar, if you learn to cook or whatever”, she said.

“So, with calculators – for me, I use a calculator,” the star confessed.

However, despite using the device, the star revealed that she understood the equation she was entering into the calculator, instead of simply getting the device to do the work for her.

“But I know the order in which and why I’m putting the numbers in a particular order,” she explained.

The TV star studied for a degree in engineering at Cambridge University in 1978.

At 21, she then went on to star on Channel 4 show Countdown for 26 years, as co-host and maths whizz.

The best-selling author has an IQ of 154, six points lower than theoretical physicist and genius Stephen Hawking.

Also on the show, Carol said a potential government plan to provide abacuses in schools to help with maths teaching is a bad idea.

“It’s a nice practice thing. But that’s not our culture here,” she said when questioned by Alex over the government’s initiative.

The One Show is on weekdays on BBC One at 7pm.
