Ashley Cain speaks to ex Safiyya ‘every day’ as ‘no one understands’ their heartbreak

September 27, 2022

When Ashley Cain's beloved daughter Azaylia passed away at the age of eight months in April 2021, the dad-of-one was left in pieces. Spending every day with his family, he struggled to come to terms with the gaping hole left behind by his baby girl.

Less than a year later, he was dealt yet another blow as he was told his grandmother had died, joining "the angels in paradise", just minutes before he was due to head into the very first Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins challenge.

Speaking exclusively to OK! about the moment he found out, which will not be seen on screen, Ashley shared: "On that first episode, I got a phone call from home telling me that I lost my grandma, then we had to go straight to the first challenge. She passed away and they didn't air that…"

The star was faced with a choice: go home and grieve two losses or stay and work through his emotions through gruelling tasks in the protected desert area of Wadi Rum in the Middle Eastern kingdom of Jordan.

"I had the option to pull out the first day or continue the show," he explained. "Afterwards, when I got my head around losing my grandma, I said 'No, I'm here. I've got to do it properly. I don't want to cheat. I don't want people to make exceptions for me, because in life you don't get exceptions made for you.

"'No one cares about your excuses. So I'm not going to have any excuses right now, while I'm in here.'"

Ashley said the producers ultimately called him to let him know of their decision not to air the heart wrenching scenes, which would have seen him talking about his beloved Nana.

Describing the situation as a "tough experience all round", Ashley went on to say that people don't know who they really are until they go through something difficult. "That was why I went in there, and I believe that I had a good crack at it," he said.

Going onto Celebrity SAS was the first time he had been around so many people who weren't family since the death of his baby girl Azaylia.

Putting himself through the overwhelming experience of meeting new people and being surrounded by different personalities, instead of staying with his family was difficult.

Time away from home meant he also couldn't visit his late daughter's grave, which is something he did with his former partner Safiyya Vorajee "every single day".

Ashley, who went on the show to "combat the trauma" of Azaylia's death, added: "It was it was hard. Yeah, it was very difficult in extremely different aspects. Well, I guess that's what I wanted to."

While he knew some of the contestants going in already, one person that surprised him was Ferne McCann as he said "you wouldn't think she's as strong as she is".

He continued: "She was out to prove something – I think to herself and to probably all the people that have known her through the years on TV. I was really, really impressed with her."
