Drivers are making 50-mile round trips to fill up at tiny rural garage selling some of UK’s cheapest fuel

Drivers are making a 50-mile round trip to save a few pennies when it comes to filling up with fuel. 

Such is the demand for petrol and diesel at Dale Head garage in Hawes, North Yorkshire, people have to wait in long lines to top up their tanks. 

The filling station was one of the first community-run facilities in the country to be run on a not-for-profit basis.

According to locals, some people from neighbouring Cumbria travel to Hawes for cheap fuel

According to The Sun, a litre of unleaded costs £1.195, while diesel is slightly more expensive at £1.225. 

Councillor John Blackie said: ‘It’s been an incredible success firstly because the local community is very supportive and secondly, people from this part of Yorkshire are keen on a bargain – and it’s definitely a bargain.’

The Upper Dales Community Partnership takes delivery of 30,000 litres of fuel every five days to cope with demand. 

Cllr Blackie added: ‘We study prices closely to make sure we are not losing money but if the wholesale price goes up I’ll wait a week to see if it was just a one-off before increasing our price.

‘We don’t rush to put the prices up but we certainly rush to decrease them if the price to us drops.’ 

He said having affordable fuel in a rural community helps everyone, with people even driving from neighbouring Cumbria to fill up.
