Five daunting trends Man Utd must buck to stun Barcelona and progress in the Champions LeagueApril 15, 2019
MANCHESTER UNITED have it all to do yet again in the Champions League after slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the quarter-final first-leg at home to Barcelona.
A Luke Shaw own-goal ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co slipped to another Old Trafford defeat in Europe.
Now the stats suggest United are staring elimination square in the face – and may need another Paris Saint-Germain-style miracle.
In the last-16, the Red Devils somehow turned around a 2-0 first-leg deficit, by beating the star-studded French squad 3-1 at the Parc des Princes.
But in order to overcome Spanish giants Barcelona, United will need to buck FIVE incredible trends at the Nou Camp…
JOY OF SIX
OF the 70 previous occasions a side has won a Champions League knockout tie first leg away from home, just four have been eliminated (six per cent).
However, two of those instances have been in this season’s competition, including once by Manchester United – against Paris Saint-Germain.
BARCELONA have never lost a home match against Man Utd in European competition – having won two and drawn two.
The last clash between the pair finished 0-0 in April 2008.
THIRD TIME LUCKY?
BARCA have progressed in 39 of their 41 European ties where they've won the first leg away from home.
The only two exceptions were against Cologne in the 1980-81 Uefa Cup and against Metz in the 1984-85 Cup Winners’ Cup.
FORTRESS NOU CAMP
THE Spanish giants are unbeaten in 30 Champions League home games, the longest such run in the competition – winning 27 of those.
Barcelona have also not conceded more than once in any of those 30 games (15 goals in total) since a 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the 2012-13 semi-finals.
THINGS COULD GET MESSI
LIONEL MESSI has scored 22 goals in 31 Champions League games against English opponents, more than any other player in the competition.
Of those 22 goals, 13 have come in his last nine games against English sides at the Nou Camp, including hat-tricks vs Arsenal (April 2010) and Manchester City (October 2016).
