Natalie Portman Is 'Sorry for Any Hurt' She Caused Jessica Simpson Over Bikini Pics Comment

Natalie Portman has “nothing but respect” for Jessica Simpson and is “sorry for any hurt” her words about the singer may have caused. Her apology comes after Simpson expressed disappointment over recent comments the actress made about her.

In an interview with USA Today, Portman, who plays a pop star in her new film Vox Lux, addressed the overt sexualization of women by the music industry in the late ’90s and early ’00s, and name-checked Simpson posing in a bikini and professing her virginity as one example.

“I remember being a teenager, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying ‘I’m a virgin,’ while wearing a bikini, and I was confused,” Portman told USA Today. “Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl.”

Simpson was “disappointed” by Portman’s comments, and addressed the actress in a poignant Instagram note that referenced the importance of supporting women’s choices.

“@Natalieportman — I was disappointed this morning when I read that I confused you by wearing a bikini in a published photo taken of me when I was still a virgin in 1999. As public figures, we both know our image is not totally in our control at all times, and that the industry we work in often tries to define us and box us in,” Simpson began. “However, I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves, which is why I believed then — and believe now — that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body art not synonymous with having sex. I have always embraced being a role model to all women to let them know they can look however they want, wear whatever they want and have sex or not have sex with whomever they want. They power lies within us as individuals. I have made it my practice to not shame other women for their choices. In this era of Time’s Up and all the great work you have done for women, I encourage you to do the same.”

Portman responded shortly after in the Instagram comments section, telling Simpson, “Thank you for your words. I completely agree with you that a woman should be allowed to dress however she likes and behave however she likes and not be judged. I only meant to say I was confused — as a girl coming of age in the public eye around the same time — by the media’s mixed messages about how girls and women were supposed to behave. I didn’t mean to shame you and I’m sorry for any hurt my words may have caused. I have nothing but respect for your talent and your voice that you use to encourage and empower women all over the globe.”

Portman’s team did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

While most commenters seemed to support Simpson’s sentiment, other people referenced that she might be misreading the situation.

“I think you might have taken her comments the wrong way and out of context,” one wrote.

Portman has been a Time’s Up advocate from the beginning, and she’s very vocal about how women deserve to be treated in and outside of Hollywood.

In October, the Oscar Winner spoke about sexual harassment, equal pay, representation and more as an honoree at Variety’s Power of Women summit.

“Stop the rhetoric that a woman is crazy or difficult,” Portman said. “If a man says to you that a woman is crazy or difficult, ask him,’ What bad thing did you do to her?’ … That’s a code word. He’s trying to discredit her reputation. Make efforts to hire people who’ve had their reputations smeared in retaliation.”

In Vox Lux, she plays a 30-something pop star who rose to fame in the late ’90s and now grapples with her superstardom. Portman told USA Today, that musicians have it harder than anyone else in the spotlight when it comes to public scrutiny.

“People who succeed in music, their fandom is much larger than any actor, and it’s them as themselves whereas actors are in character,” Portman said. “There’s a difference in expectation.”

A source tells PEOPLE that Simpson’s takes her platform as a role model very seriously, which sparked her passionate reaction.

“Jessica feels very strongly about being a role model and it hurt her to read those comments,” the source says.

“She  believes strongly in supporting women’s choices and their individuality,” the insider adds. “She understands that the pop music industry at the time had a vision for her and she chose to put on that bikini for the photo shoot and she was okay with it.”

It follows the success of the Love Actually short film that premiered for Red Nose Day 2017.

Jessica Simpson Slams Natalie Portman’s ‘Virgin in a Bikini’ Comments

Keeping it real. Jessica Simpson didn’t appreciate Natalie Portman questioning whether she was a virgin in 1999 simply because she took photos posing in a bikini — and she sure did let her know it.

The fashion designer, 38, took to Twitter on Wednesday, December 5, to post a statement addressed to Portman, 37, who made the controversial comments in an interview the day before. “@Natalieportman I was disappointed this morning when I read that I ‘confused’ you by wearing a bikini in a published photo taken of me when I was still a virgin in 1999,” Simpson began. “As public figures, we both know our image is not totally in our control at all times, and that the industry we work in often tries to define us and box us in.”

“However, I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves, which is why I believed then — and I believe now — that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex,” the “Sweetest Sin” singer continued. “I have always embraced being a role model to all women to let them know that they can look however they want, wear whatever they want and have sex or not have sex with whomever they want.”

“The power lies within us as individuals,” the Dukes of Hazzard actress wrote. “I have made it my practice to not shame other women for their choices. In this era of Time’s Up and all the great work you have done for women, I encourage you to do the same.”

Simpson was referring to Portman’s comments published by USA Today on Tuesday, December 4, in which the Black Swan star discussed the phenomenon of certain pop stars during the early 2000s being promoted as virgins despite dressing in a way that suggested otherwise. “I remember being a teenager, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying ‘I’m a virgin’ while wearing a bikini, and I was confused,” Portman told the newspaper. ”Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl.”

The former Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica star publicly stated early in her career that she planned to save herself for marriage and later admitted she lost her virginity to Nick Lachey, whom she married in 2002. Calling her wedding night “the most amazing moment of my life,” Simpson told Blender magazine in 2003. “I’m so lucky I didn’t lose my virginity in the back of a Jeep or something. Instead, I had this amazing, elaborate wedding and I topped it off with that.”

Simpson and Lachey, 45, divorced in 2006. She went on to marry Eric Johnson in 2014 and they share daughter Maxwell, 6, and son Ace. In September, the shoe designer revealed on Instagram that she and Johnson, 38, were expecting their third child — a baby girl.

Kate Middleton goes full glamour in Princess Diana’s favorite tiara

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, dressed in a sequin gown and dazzling tiara, brought full royal glamour to a white-tie reception at Buckingham Palace.

Interested in Royal Family?

Kate, 36, wore the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, a favorite of Princess Diana’s, to the annual Diplomatic Reception Tuesday night.

The tiara, which Kate also wore to a state banquet in October, was created by Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1913, and was also seen on Prince William’s mother, the late Princess Diana of Wales.

Kate paired the tiara with a glittering off-white gown embellished with sequins by designer Jenny Packham.

Describing the annual event, ABC’s Royal Contributor Victoria Murphy explained, “It’s a white tie event so its possibly the glitziest event in the royal calendar. You don’t get any more dressed up than white tie events, so of course Kate was wearing a full length gown. She was wearing a tiara, what is proving to be her favorite tiara actually – the Lover’s Knot tiara.”

Murphy noted that it had been a “busy day” for the Cambridges, who earlier in the day hosted a party for families of deployed personnel from Royal Air Force (RAF) Coningsby and RAF Marham, who are serving in Cyprus.

(MORE: Kate Middleton looks festive in plaid skirt at Christmas party for military families)

“It was really important for them to do that because they wanted to recognize the sacrifice that a lot of families make when a loved one is overseas during the festive period,” Murphy said. “It can be particularly difficult and of course Kate has an understanding of what it’s like for someone to be away for long periods of time when they’re serving with the military.”

According to Murphy, who attended the event, it was a very relaxed and fun occasion with the Cambridges in festive spirits.

“They were laughing and really enjoying it and getting into the spirit of the event,” she said. “They joined in with children’s games. They were playing games with kids, throwing balls across the room really enjoying themselves.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked through a blizzard of fake snow as they arrived at the Kensington Palace event.

Kate, who looked festive in a plaid skirt by Emilia Wickstead, delivered a speech at the party in which she thanked the military families for their service.

On Wednesday, the morning after the Diplomatic Reception, William and Kate touched down in Cyprus to meet with Royal Air Force service members, their families who live on base and members of the local community.

“William and Kate are playing Santa at Christmas” Murphy joked, explaining that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delivering presents and cards they collected at the party on Tuesday from family and friends of the personnel serving in Cyprus.

Scott Disick Bothered By Kourtney Kardashian’s Relationship With Travis Barker, Per ‘HL’

Scott Disick is reportedly bothered by his former girlfriend Kourtney Kardashian’s flirty relationship with Blink 182 drummer, Travis Barker.

According to a December 5 report by Hollywood Life, Scott Disick is said to be “riled up” over Kourtney Kardashian’s bond and friendship with Travis Barker and believes that it could lead to something more serious, such as a romance, in the future.

Sources tell the outlet that although the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star claims she and the drummer are nothing but good friends, those around the pair believe that there could be a spark there, Disick included.

“Travis and Kourtney are very flirty when they’re together but she swears they’re just really good friends. Not everyone believes her though, Scott is very suspicious that there could be something going on between them on the down low. He gets riled up when he sees pictures of them hanging out, it bugs him because he feels like Kourtney’s hiding something from him. He grills her over it all the time, he still wants to know every move she makes, but she just laughs it off,” an insider dished.

As many fans already know, Kourtney and Scott share three children together, Mason, Penelope, and Reign. The couple spent nearly 10 years together before calling it quits back in the summer of 2015 following a long period of tension in their relationship.

I woke up this morning in bed with my children, in the same house as my sisters (minus @khloekardashian ????????i miss you), my brothers, the father of my kids, my mommy, my grandma, my nieces and nephew. I feel beyond grateful. Happy Thanksgiving!

A post shared by Kourtney Kardashian (@kourtneykardash) on

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Kourtney Kardashian is not the only one who’s moving on from the relationship. Scott Disick has been dating model Sofia Richie for over a year, and the pair appears to be getting really serious.

Last month, Kourtney was spotted having dinner with Scott and Sofia on two separate occasions. The trio allegedly talked about co-parenting, and other issues involving Kardashian and Disick’s three children. However, sources tell Radar Online that Scott was relieved to have Kourtney finally accept that Sofia was a part of the kids’ lives.

“Scott never thought the day would come that he would be out to dinner with Kourtney and Sophia twice in one month. It was a huge step forward for all of them, but it needed to happen because the drama was not healthy for their children,” a source told the outlet.

Fans can see more of Kourtney Kardashian’s personal life, and her co-parenting relationship with former boyfriend, Scott Disick, when Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on the E! network.

Today In Random: Jessica Simpson Let Natalie Portman Have It For Bikini-Shaming Her (UPDATE)

If a pop star from the olden times had to go after a nose-in-the-air pretentious Oscar-winning actress, my first choice would be Samantha Fox going after Goopy Paltrow for saying that she made yoga popular when we all know that Samantha Fox not only invented yoga, but made it popular too (see: Samantha Fox doing downward dog, sort of). But I’ll take Jessica Simpson dropping a fart on Natalie Portman for words Natalie said about her posing in a bikini when she was a teenage virgin.

Natalie Portman is promoting her latest Oscar bait movie, Vox Lux, where she plays a pop star, so she’s talking about pop stars, of course. While talking to USA Today, Natalie patted Madonna on the taint by pretty much saying, “There could be 100 pop stars in the room, and none do anything for you, but there’s 1 that’s bold, and she changes your life.” Natalie basically said that she grew up with Madonna and was lucky to have a pop star who pushed the limits and pissed people off. But then Natalie pissed Jessica Simpson off by mentioning being confused by seeing a 19-year-old Jessica declare that she’s a virgin while wearing a bikini.

But she also remembers the virgin/vixen paradigms lobbed by the music industry as the millennium neared. “I remember being a teenager, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying ‘I’m a virgin’ while wearing a bikini, and I was confused. Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl,” she says.

The Google Alert that Jessica obviously has for herself must’ve went off, and the assistant who read the article to her must’ve read it wrong. Because Jessica thought Natalie was saying that only dick-crazy mega sluts should pose for bikini pictures. Jessica gave Natalie a slut-shaming lesson in the form of words on a red background.
