Fitbits and activity trackers recommend the average person should be doing 10,000 steps every day to enjoy a fulfilling, healthy life.
But for those who work a typical 9-5pm job with a long commute to and from the office it can be difficult to find the time to clock in that much exercise.
For the individuals who are managing it, it may come as little surprise to here they’re not exactly achieving those steps under the fairest of circumstances.

A group of them spoke to Whimn about the shortcuts they’ve taken – or outrightly insane practices they’ve taken up – to make it work for them.
One woman said she will often jog, do star jumps or partake in some high knees around her 500-square foot apartment to increase the tally, or walk up and down the hallway obsessively if she’s behind schedule.

Others admitted to circling service stations while someone fills up the car’s petrol on a road trip or placing their Fitbit in the dryer on a cool-air setting for an hour – just to beat their friends.
Speaking of bets, individuals are also placing wearable trackers on their small children or ceiling fans to rack up extra points that way.

Those who reached 10,000 steps ‘easily’ admitted to owning a large dog that needed daily walks, a stair stepper they used while watching TV shows of an evening or long jaunts to the train or bus shelter to get to work.
People who couldn’t fathom hitting those numbers tended to live a more sedentary life, worked from home or ‘played a lot of video games’.
One interesting place to step in style was at the shopping centre, with women in the thread saying they arrived hours before the stores opened – because the front doors are sometimes unlocked – and they can ‘window shop as they wander’.
‘The stores at my local centre open at 10am but the actual mall opens at 6.30am,’ a lady explained.
‘I was a little embarrassed the first time I did this because I’m not elderly. But it’s such a good way to get steps in when it’s cold or rainy out. I wear my headphones and just start walking.’
