The 'Bird Box' Challenge Is Dumb and Could Land You in the HospitalJanuary 2, 2019
Sandra Bullock wears a blindfold in Bird Box because she has to. But a lot of people in the real world who don’t have apparently made the misguided decision to do the same.
In case you’ve been asleep through the holidays, Bird Box is Netflix’s new hugely popular original survivalist thriller/horror movie, in which Bullock lives in a post-apocalyptic world where some kind of entity attacks people via their sight and causes them to kill themselves. It’s a bonkers setup, and Bullock fully commits. In order to evade the monster and hopefully find her way to safety, her character does everything with a blindfold: She totes her two kids around, she travels in a boat, she even shoots an attacker.
The viral sensation that is Bird Box has bled over into our own world in a troubling way. The movie inspired the so-called Bird Box challenge (or #BirdBoxChallenge), in which people are willfully blindfolding themselves while going about their daily tasks, including riding a scooter. It’s unclear why anyone would do this. To relate to poor Bullock? To prove to themselves just how hard it is to live without vision?
In any case, the challenge has led to some unsurprising crashes and falls. It even prompted Netflix to actually come out and say that the challenge is indeed a bad idea on Twitter, where the movie has been tweeted about more than 8 million times in the last 30 days.
Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.
The streaming giant threw in a little humor with its warning, saying, “Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes,” in a reference to the kids in Bullock’s care in the film.
Bird Box is a fun, albeit flawed, scary flick with a killer premise. Being able to see is great, and going through the world blind makes life a lot harder. There is no challenge necessary to understand this. Let’s all please move on.
