Meghan Markle ‘forced’ to take part in Queen’s Christmas Day telly tradition

Meghan Markle will have to spend her first Christmas as part of the royal family watching EastEnders.

The Duchess of Sussex and husband Prince Harry are set to join the Queen at Sandringham in Norfolk for the royals’ big festive celebrations.

As well as attend a service at St Mary Magdalene Church and eat a large Christmas dinner, the royal family will gather around the television to watch the ‘Enders Christmas special, as well as the Queen’s Speech.

A family insider told The Sun: "The Queen loves EastEnders, and every Christmas, without fail, the telly goes on and the strains of the show’s distinctive theme tune bellow out.

"It is an unlikely family tradition, and non-negotiable – even more so than watching the Queen’s speech! Obviously a couple of jokes have already been made about switching on the subtitles this year."

While it’s Meghan’s first Christmas as an official member of the royal family, she was invited to spend the festive period at Sandringham last year as Prince Harry’s then-fiancee.

Meghan was pictured outside the church alongside her fiance and the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge on Christmas morning, with the media dubbing them ‘the fab four’.

The couple announced their engagement in November 2017 after a whirlwind 16-month long-distance romance.

Since tying the knot in Windsor in May, Meghan quickly fell pregnant with the couple’s first child, which is due in the spring.

Despite claims of the rift between the two couples, it is believed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will stay with the Cambridges at their Norfolk home Amner Hall over Christmas.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s estranged husband Thomas Markle has accused the couple of putting up a "wall of silence" since he missed the royal wedding.

He told the Mail On Sunday: "I have made dozens of attempts to reach my daughter via text and letters, but she and Harry have put up a wall of silence.

‘If she would just speak to me, things could be different. I love Meghan very much. I want her and Harry to have a beautiful, healthy baby and a great life."
