Poldark hunk Aidan Turner claims dog walking is the secret to his rippling physique.

The 35-year-old star of the hit BBC period drama says it helps make him best in show.

Female viewers can’t get enough of his shirtless performances as Captain Ross Poldark in the Cornish saga.

And Irishman Aidan says it’s all thanks to taking girlfriend Caitlin FitzGerald’s pet dog Charlie for walks.

He said: “Poldark has been very good to me and I have had some really great parts in my career already with, I hope, many more to come.

“It means that I also have to take care of myself – at least until they stop wanting me to take my shirt off.

“One of the best exercise tips I have is to take a dog for a walk.”

But male fans are barking up the wrong tree if they think they too can get a chiselled torso by simply walking their pooch.

Aidan, speaking to Dogs Monthly magazine, failed to mention the two strenuous gym workouts a day he goes through before filming each series.

Still, he will be top dog when Poldark returns for the fifth and probably last series later this year after finishing filming last month in Cornwall, which has become a fan's top holiday destination.

In August, the Mirror reported how a plea for Poldark fans to avoid two beaches featured in the hit TV series was made by a Cornwall tourism boss.

Huge numbers of visitors were making a beeline for just two out of the county's 400 beaches – Kynance Cove and Porthcurno.

Visit Cornwall chief executive Malcolm Bell warned the surge was causing "gridlock" and asked tourists to consider visiting less popular spots.

"On particular peak days and especially at weekends, we have suffered from gridlock in these places," he said.

"For anybody who loves and knows our Cornwall, these particular beaches are down quite windy roads so it's not always that easy to just quickly drive on because you have got to turn round.

"It's about informing and distributing so people have a great holiday and enjoy Cornwall rather than getting frustrated at being stuck down one of our beautiful Cornish lanes."
