Adele’s ill-fated marriage to Simon Konecki… in her own wordsApril 20, 2019
After more than seven years together and three as husband and wife, Adele has announced she and Simon Konecki are separating.
The announcement was as low-key as their engagement and secret wedding, which only came to light when she told fans at a concert, "I'm married!"
They came from wildly different backgrounds – Adele, 30, was raised by a single mum in south London while Simon, 45, was born into wealth in New York before attending Eton College and becoming a foreign exchange broker.
But when they met back in 2011, fresh from Adele having her heart broken by the mystery inspiration of her album 21, they fell head-over-heels.
“It sounds obvious, but I think you only learn to love again when you fall in love again,” she told the Guardian in 2015.
“I’m in that place. My love is deep and true with my man, and that puts me in a position where I can finally reach out a hand to the ex. Let him know I’m over it.”
Here's the story of their romance…
2011 – First dates
At the end of 2011, singer Adele reportedly started dating charity boss Simon. In January 2012 they were spotted keeping it real on a alligator-spotting boat trip in Florida, where his parents live.
"When I met Simon I knew something was going to happen," she said of her man, who helped her recover from vocal chord surgery.
June 2012 – Baby announcement
The following June, a 24-year-old Adele announced she was expecting her first child on her blog.
She wrote: "I'm delighted to announce that Simon and I are expecting our first child together.
"I wanted you to hear the news direct from me, obviously we're over the moon and very excited but please respect our privacy at this precious time. Yours always, Adele xx."
The couple's son, Angelo was born on October 19 2012. Adele would later describe motherhood as "hard but phenomenal".
She added: "It's the greatest thing I ever did."
December 2014 – First signs of a crack?
Adele took a break from performing following the enormous success of her 2011 album 21, and her Oscar win for the theme from James Bond film Skyfall.
And during that time she took the rare step of issuing a public statement on her private life, dismissing reports she had split from Konecki.
Writing on Twitter , Adele said: "Just wanted to wish everyone happy holidays & all the best for 2015! PS Simon & I are still very much together, don't believe what you read x."
The Sun reported that the singer and her partner hadn't seen each other in eight weeks , and were living apart.
Simon, CEO of charity Drop4Drop, was reportedly staying in their Brighton mansion while Adele opted to bunk at her mum’s house in south London.
2016 – Adele and Konecki marry
The couple tied the knot in a secret ceremony just after Christmas but Adele managed to keep the news under wraps.
The wedding was said to have been an 'intimate affair' at their £10million Los Angeles mansion and attended by just close family and friends.
"The ceremony itself was something they knew they wanted, but they’d been putting off for a long time," an insider told Heat magazine.
In February 2017, she finally confirmed the happy news in her Grammy's acceptance speech for album of the year.
"My husband, my son, you're the only reason I do it," she said.
And she removed any doubt over her marital status during a concert in Australia.
While discussing her worldwide hit Someone Like You, which is about a break-up, she said: "Obviously I can't go through with those feelings because I'm married now. I've found my next person."
April 2019 – Shock split announcement
Adele announced she and Konecki had separated and promised to raise Angelo "together lovingly".
Representatives for the star said: "Adele and her partner have separated. They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy."
